About

The UBC Faculty of Medicine Department of Surgery educates students at the undergraduate, graduate and postgraduate levels, and pursues research to make innovative advancements in knowledge and practice to improve health.

The Department consists of more than 400 physicians, surgeons, scientists and educators and over 70 administrative, research and technical staff in nine divisions.

Specialty training programs are offered in Cardiac Surgery, General Surgery, Neurosurgery, Otolaryngology, Pediatric Surgery, Plastic Surgery, Radiation Oncology and Developmental Radiotherapeutics, Thoracic Surgery and Vascular Surgery.

Distributed across British Columbia, our faculty and students are located in our affiliated hospitals including Vancouver General Hospital, St. Paul’s Hospital, B.C. Children’s Hospital, Royal Columbian Hospital, St. Mary’s Hospital, the University Hospital of Northern BC, Nanaimo Regional Hospital, and the British Columbia Cancer Agency.

The Department is also home to the Branch for International Surgical Care (BISC) and the Centre of Excellence for Simulation Education & Innovation (CESEI). The aim of the BISC is to advances surgical care in international health by developing innovative online education programs focusing on surgical care in international health, as well as research and dialogue. CESEI is an internationally recognized multi-disciplinary academic centre committed to achieving excellence in simulation education and educational technology.
