Mrs. Nicola Jane Dorken
In the spring of 2014 the Divisions of Thoracic Surgery and Vascular Surgery recommended to the Department Head and to the Director of Administration to establish a departmental staff award in honor of Nicky Dorken, a long serving staff member in the Department of Surgery and at UBC. Their recommendation was swiftly endorsed and the award created is called the “Nicky Dorken Award for Excellence in Service” to recognize a staff member’s dedicated service. The first recipient of this award is Gayle Uthoff, Computer and LAN Manager.
Faculty and staff gathered to celebrate and present our long-time colleague, Nicky Dorken, who is currently on sick leave, with the award established in her honor. Nicky has been the Senior Administrative Assistant of our Thoracic and our Vascular Surgeries, and previously she worked as the Senior Secretary to the Head in the UBC Department of Anesthesiology. At the gathering, we heard stories about Nicky and the impact she’s made on people’s lives from the impromptu speeches and chats. We consider ourselves lucky those who shared and enjoyed Nicky’s friendship and inspiration. Her legacy will not be forgotten in the Department.
