Background
Dr. Hentschel obtained both his Medical School degree and Neurosurgical Residency training from the University of British Columbia. He then spent two years at the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, Texas for Fellowship training in Neurosurgical Oncology and stem cell research. He began his neurosurgical practice in Saskatoon as a member of the Division of Neurosurgery at the University of Saskatchewan where he became the Director of Research for the Department of Surgery. In Saskatoon, he continued with his neurosurgical oncology practice and developed expertise in minimally invasive spinal surgery and in spinal instrumentation for fractures, tumours, and degenerative disorders.

After four years in Saskatoon, Dr. Hentschel accepted a position as the Head of Neurosurgery in Victoria, B.C with the Vancouver Island Health Authority. He is actively involved in neurosurgical practice and in developing clinical programs within neurosurgery on Vancouver Island to expand the scope of the Division to better serve the patients of the region. In addition, he is involved with the Island Medical Program in the teaching of Medical Students and residents.
