Background and Focus

Dr. Evans was appointed to the UBC Department of Surgery in 2005 when he also assumed the position of Medical Manager, Trauma Services at the Vancouver General Hospital where he maintains an active clinical and academic practice in trauma and acute care general surgery. He also attended in critical care medicine at St. Paul’s Hospital until 2013. He served as the Vancouver Coastal Health Regional Medical Trauma Director from 2011-2013 and now serves as Medical Director for Trauma Services B.C., the provincial oversight organization for the British Columbia trauma system, under B.C.’s Provincial Health Services Authority.

Dr. Evans earned an honours A.B. in biology from Princeton University before completing his M.D. and General Surgery residency at McGill University. After several years of community practice in general surgery, he trained in critical care medicine at the University of Toronto and joined active staff at the McGill University Health Centre as Assistant Professor of Surgery and Critical Care Associate at the Montreal General and Royal Victoria hospitals. He directed the M.U.H.C. Adult Trauma Program and the Montreal General Hospital Trauma Acute Care General Surgery Service from 2000-2005. After joining the U.B.C. Faculty of Medicine and V.G.H. Trauma Services in 2005, he completed an M.Sc. degree in Epidemiology at the University of British Columbia. He currently leads a CIHR Partnerships for Health System Improvement program research grant to develop policy-relevant performance reporting for the B.C. trauma system, and actively contributes to a number of other national and international research initiatives.

Dr. Evans is a past chair of the Trauma/Critical Care Committee of the Canadian Association of General Surgeons. He is a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada and has served on its General Surgery examination board for many years. He is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons and has served as Quebec Chair for the ACS Committee on Trauma. He has been an Executive Board member of the Trauma Association of Canada and remains active in clinical and health systems research in trauma and acute care general surgery.
