Surgery Grand Rounds

UBC Department of Surgery Rounds are typically scheduled from 7-8am on the second Wednesday every month from September to June. Generally they are a hybrid session with in person session taking place at:

Annabel K. Gravely, BSc. (Hons); UBC 2nd year MD student and winner of the 2025 Dr. Nis Schmidt History of Surgery Prize.

Annabel Gravely is a 2nd year medical student (’27) at the University of British Columbia. She grew up in Toronto and completed her BSc (Hons) ’23 in Medical Science at Dalhousie University, before moving out west. She’s been involved in clinical research in the field of liver transplant and liver cancer since 2020, with recent interest and publications in post-LT biomarkers,  pre-LT immunotherapy, and in improving communication with surgical patients via ERAS materials. Outside of research, Annabel is in the midst of triathlon training, plays soccer (goalkeeper), and is always looking for new creative outlets (medical illustration, poetry, and writing). 

Anthony Papp, MD, PhD, FRCSC, FABA; Medical Director, BC Professional Firefighters’ Burn Unit, VGH and Clinical Professor, UBC

Anthony Papp is a Clinical Professor in the UBC Division of Plastic Surgery. He has been the Medical Director of the BC Professional Firefighters’ Burn Unit since 2007, the Editor-in-Chief of Burns Open since 2025, and the President of the Canadian Burn Association since 2024. He has over 65 publications, 110 meeting abstracts and 23 book chapters.

Learning Objectives:

  • To review the history of liver transplantation
  • To reflect on the history of the Vancouver General Hospital Burn Unit
  • To learn about the patient volumes, development and research activities of the Burn Unit.
