Augmented Reality Surgery

The University of B.C. Hospital is the first in Canada to use a new imaging system to help reduce risks of surgical complications during laparascopic gallbladder surgery.

Dr. Neely Panton (Head, General Surgery said in an interview in the Vancouver Sun that a trial of the $150,000 technology developed by a Canadian company called Novadaq showed it to be a significant advance. The technology combines a fluorescent dye (indocyanine green) and a special laparoscopic camera to allow surgeons to see real-time imaging of specific vessels during minimally invasive operations. Based on this successful trial, the UBC/VGH Hospital Foundation will purchase the system for clinical use and research.
