New Fellowship Award Winners

ATabatabei

Congratulations to:
Dr. Azadeh Tabatabaei (supervisor, Dr. Bruce Verchere, General Surgery) who has won a JDRF fellowship to prevent pancreatic islet autoimmunity by manipulating beta cell metabolism. Insulin-producing beta cells in pancreatic islets have a very specialized metabolism that we propose may make them more susceptible to autoimmune attack in type 1 diabetes. Dr. Tabatabaei aims to help beta cells escape immune attack, by making small changes in the expression of key metabolic enzymes that are normally not expressed in beta cells. She will investigate this approach both in prevention of autoimmune diabetes and rejection of islet transplants.
