HPB Fellowship Program Information

Our Program In Numbers

UBC offers a 2-year Hepatopancreatobiliary (HPB) and Abdominal Transplant Surgery Fellowship program.   The group of supervising surgeons consists of 5 HPB/Liver transplant surgeons who also participate in organ retrieval.  Vancouver General Hospital is the only liver transplant centre in the province of British Columbia with a large catchment area.  It also serves as a quaternary trauma centre.  The fellows will participate in a high volume of HPB benign/oncology cases, procurements, and abdominal organ transplantation. We believe in mentoring and supporting our fellows in a graduated process. They are considered to be the leaders of the team, and are key components of clinical care. A graduated level of responsibility and autonomy occurs during your training, and the expectation is proficiency with major HPB surgeries, retrievals, and abdominal transplant surgery.

The expected volume of cases per fellow, with 2 fellows per year, surpasses the AHPBA caseload requirements.

We have weekly teaching rounds, regular Morbidity and Mortality rounds, and also recommend our fellows to attend our weekly Liver and Pancreas tumor board rounds. There are opportunities to attend liver transplant and HPB clinics. There is also an opportunity for research in transplantation and HPB and a strong encouragement to publish.  We have an ongoing prospective pancreas cancer and liver transplant database as a source of data for publications.
