62. – Hjalmar Johnson New Investigator Award

Congratulations to: Francis C. Lynn,Ph.D
Dr. Francis Lynn (General Surgery)
who obtained his PhD in Physiology from the University of British Columbia in 2003. Following this he moved to the University of California San Francisco supported by JDRF Postdoctoral and Advanced Postdoctoral Fellowships with Dr. Michael German. Francis was recruited to the Child and Family Research Institute at University of British Columbia in 2009 where he is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Surgery. The Goepel Family/Canadian Diabetes Association Young Investigator Award in Islet Cell Development facilitated his move back to Canada. Francis currently holds the inaugural Alan Permutt Career Development Award from the JDRF and a Scholar Award from the Michael Smith Foundation for Health Research. Francis’ work has led to publication of 26 articles that have collectively been cited over 1400 times in top journals including Diabetes, PNAS, Nature and Nature Medicine. The Lynn Lab currently has 8 members and is funded by grants from the CIHR, JDRF and the Stem Cell Network. Research is focused on understanding how we can improve the in vitro development of cell-based therapies for diabetes by taking cues from embryonic development. 61. – Richard J Finley Senior Investigator Award

Congratulations to:
Dr. Paul Steinbok (Neurosurgery)
who is Head of the Division of Pediatric Neurosurgery. Dr. Steinbok obtained his medical training at the University of the West Indies in Jamaica and a honors degree in Physiology at the University of Newcastle upon Tyne, U.K. After a neurosurgery residency in neurosurgery in Vancouver and a Medical Research Council of Canada funded research fellowship at University of North Carolina and Duke University, he returned to UBC in 1979. Dr. Steinbok has become recognized internationally as a leader in pediatric neurosurgery. His clinical interests include surgical treatment of children with spastic cerebral palsy, epilepsy and craniopharyngiomas and is acknowledged as an international expert in these areas. Academically Dr. Steinbok is a full Professor at UBC with over 150 publications in peer reviewed journals and chapters in textbooks. Dr. Steinbok has also taken a major interest in international education of neurosurgeons in the field of pediatric neurosurgery. He has organized a number of international courses and served as the first Chair of the Education Committee of the Joint Section of Pediatric Neurosurgery of the American Association of Neurological Surgeons and Congress of Neurological Surgeons.
